11:51 am - more notes from the road
August 25th – Kelowna

This day was a bust. The show we were playing was extremely under-promoted and we weren’t even sure it was going to go on. We played in this enormous venue called The Warehouse. The capacity was probably about 800, yet we probably played for about 12. We played with an oldschool punk rock band called the HIPPIE CRITS who were tons of fun and made the show worthwhile for us. At the show we met a guy who was staying in the outskirts of the city for the summer picking cherries and apples and pears for some company. He somehow convinced us that we should go back to his campsite with him where he told us there would be lots of room, couches, showers, laundry and other comforts of modern man. One of Nick’s old friends showed up just as we were pulling out of the venue and begged us to let him hang out with her for a few hours, then they would come meet us at the cherry picking camp. We let him go and made out trek to the campsite. When we got there we knew we had made a horrible mistake: It was in an extremely obscure location about an hour away from the venue, we had to follow nameless dirt roads to get there, it was cold and muddy. Although there was a big common building with a kitchen, couches, television, bathroom, etc. there was A WALL MISSING. The guy who took us to the campsite told us that sometimes BATS FLEW AROUND IN THE ROOM AT NIGHT. We made veggie burgers and hi-tailed it out of there. We spent the night in a motel that had amazing wallpaper and water pressure.

August 24th – Calgary again

Today we slept in for once and then hung around at the outhouse. Up until today the weather was awful, but at some point mid-afternoon the sun broke though the clouds and everyone wanted to play outside. Shawn (from the house) took me (Chrissy) on a bike ride downtown and it was the shiz. We went to the record store where one of the guys from MICO manages just because I wanted to say hi and make sure he knew about the show. He did and told me that they would all swing by after band practice. We played at a place called Broken City and had a swell time. The staff was extremely nice and kept our glasses of fountain soda full. The promoter of the show, Zach, was rad. We highly suggest touring bands get in touch with him. Middle Weights and Lucid 44 played with us. It was a very diverse bill…. Middle Weights where an improvisational free jazz act featuring violin, laptop and live drums. Lucid 44 were a slow and dirty two-piece remnant of Wilco. After the show I stayed up late playing Tetris with Shawn even though we had to get up painfully early the next morning.

August 23rd – Calgary

We love playing your punk houses. The outhouse was, by far, the cleanest punk house we had ever been too and filled with some of the nicest kids we’ve met on this tour. We told the dwellers at the house that the name “outhouse” was quite misleading for such a clean and swanky pad to which Grant replied “it’s where all the good shit goes down!” We don’t doubt it for a second.

August 21st and 22nd – Edmonton

It was so cold and rainy in Edmonton. We actually got frost one night. On the 21st we played a really nice venue called Seedy’s. They had vanilla hand lotion in the women’s bathroom attesting to how classy an establishment they are. The next day we took the day off to spend time with our friends in the Wolfnote. It rained, we watched movies and made soup.

August 20th – Saskatoon

Tonight we played in a Unitarian church. There were not many people who showed up, but we still rocked it anyways. We played with Ride T’ill Dawn Amigos, Odds and Ends and The Red Scare (from Vancouver). We were all really psyched about this show because we thought we were playing with The Red Scare band from Kentucky. However, we assure you that The Red Scare from Vancouver are totally awesome: a cross between The Pixies and The Modest mouse, but on speed.

August 19th – Regina

We played at a venue called O’Hanlon’s tonight with a phenomenal country-tinged folk outfit called FIGHTTHEMONSTER, comprised of a cast of sweet punk rockers. The vibe of the venue was somewhat strange: a very large space with a balcony. About 150 people were in attendance, all of who made us feel at home. AJ, the guy who booked our show, was possibly the nicest promoter we have ever dealt with. The nest day we ate at the 13th street café and we highly suggest this place to anyone going to Regina. MM MM DRAGON BOWLS!

11:30 am - notes from the road
wednesday august 18th - winnipeg, mb

crossing the boarder was a bit tricky because we had to make it seem like we were in the us only passing through to see friends and not playing shows (even though we had all our gear and a box of merch with us. the boarder guards anally searched our van for what felt like an infinity, looking under the lids of our deodarent and through our dirty laundry for drugs or weapons. of course we came out clean (duh), however they made us late for our show. the venue was an all-vegan joint called the MOONDRAGON CAFE. we got in, set up, played for songs, tore down. this was a another fantastic show (thanks kevin!). the audience was so diverse.. the crowd ranging from 5 year old kids to 70 year old adults. they were all very receptive, and in the end bought a lot of our cds/shirts. we only got to see the last band play (RED EYE MORNING feat. ex-bonaduces members) and they were just GREAT. we ate the best meal we had had in a week after we played (hello southern friend tofu sammiches!!) and were all caught up in winnipeg and how progressive and nice a city it was.

tuesday august 17th - fargo, nd

this was the best show of our tour thus far. who would have thought? we didn't even have directions to the venue, only knew it was called RALPH'S CORNER. we drove into town and stopped the van. two punk kids were on their bikes so i opened the door and said "hey kids, do you know where ralph's is??" then i immediately felt stupid because it was a kid and his mom riding together and i got all "oh.. you're a mom!!" she laughed and told us that we were actually right outside ralph's and pointed to the big sign across the street clearly reading "ralph's corner". after loading in and went and explored a record shop where i stayed for several hours speaking with the store manager about all kinds of music. he was 37 and filled with extensive knowledge about all forms of music. he bought 10 of our cds and even gave me some to take with me! the show that night was great, everyone in fargo is just so nice... we cannot wait to go back sometime!! thanks to christy and trish for putting us up and for having a crazy keyboard/accordion/violin/jew's harp jam session with us at 3am.

monday august 16th - a suburb of st. paul, mn

MY RUBICON and ICOLLIDE played with us in this garage out in the middle of nowhere. it was so rad... this kid and his dad built the venue themselves and it had a 3 ft stage, a great lighting system, and impeccable sound. also, they had the tackiest wallpaper i have ever seen in the bathroom. it was honestly BEAUTIFUL, as a result, crammed a lot of people from the bands in the bathroom to take photos (which i don't have now but will get processed when we get back). both bands were just great. my rubicon is bill (ex- ENDTHISDAY's) new band. ICOLLIDE just completely blew us away. everyone has to check out this band!! we ended up staying with the singer aryn that night in minneapolis. he had a great record collection and we stayed up till dawn listening to hair metal and pumping our fists in the air.

sunday august 15th - highland, in

a lot of bands played today (including A SUBURBAN BLOOD DRIVE from the night before and BELOW RADAR who are a bunch of sweethearts). we got to the venue early and hung out outside for about an hour making make-shift burritos. i tried to buy a frisbee but they had none left in any of the stores i went to. too bad though, it was the perfect day for a frisbeeing. the show wasn't so great, only about a quarter of the kids seemed to give us any time of day (but those that did made the experience so worthwhile - thanks!) what was great about today was getting to see one of the dearest people in my life who i now only get to see once a year. also, big thanks to julie for sheltering us in her OH SO BEAUTIFUL chicago apartment.

saturday august 14th (evening) - detroit, mi

you must think we are crazy... playing 2 shows in the same day in towns hours apart. we are. the show tonight was at my friend eric's skateshop. we played with A SUBURBAN BLOOD DRIVE (from KY) and a local band called DOCUMENT. there was not a lot of people in attendance and we were kind of bummed, but it was great seeing our good friend sean (from RESCUE) and eric again.

saturday august 14th (afternoon) - cleveland, oh

when we got to the venue the door was locked. the owner later confessed that this was because he lives upstairs from the venue and when he tried to come downstairs to open the door for us his door handle broke off leaving him to climb out his bedroom window and into the adjacent one, trying hard not to die. this show was supposed to be some sort of benefit for a scene site where there would be bands playing and a punk rock carwash going on. only the girl organizing it was a flake and bailed on us without telling. that's ok, cleveland was cool... we went out for rad thai food and made a new friend.

friday august 13th (late night mayhem) - buffalo, ny

immediately after getting back into the van in auburn we hauled butt over to buffalo NY where we played a show in a bar. opening was a band called WE SING THE BODY ELECTRIC who were reminiscent of HELLA and quite good. then another band called the MISSING PLANES played who reminded us a lot of 1994, the riot girl scene and, for me (chrissy), the reasons that i wanted to start playing in bands.

friday august 13th (early evening) - auburn, ny

we were all pretty stressed out about crossing the boarder, seeing as we are canadian citizens who do not have us visas and thus, cannot "work". we made it across just fine however and were so excited and happy that we missed our exit to get to ellenburg where my parents (so lovingly) had smuggled our merch to the week before. we lost about an hour making the backtrack and then drove through a major rain storm. we arrived in auburn at about 7:30. we unloaded, played, tore down, loaded back in and left all within an hour and a half. the show was in a very large gymnasium yet there was only about 50 kids in attendance. this said, the acoustics were horrible! also, we played our set using only a string of tube lights and it was so dark that during the first song i kept fumbling around with my parts because my eyes had not yet adjusted to the darkness. onelinedrawing's tour manager, james dean, came out to see us. he also brought me one of the most amazing vegan cookies i had ever had in my life. <3 ALSO! one of the guitar players from MANOWAR was there. boy was his hair ever long...

3:18 pm - the truth tastes like poison
hi everyone,

it's been a very busy few months for us, writing new material and training our new guitarist, Nick Kuepfer (formerly of the band lungbutter). we've played 8 shows with him so far, in southern ontario and in the maritimes. things are going well. this weekend, we're recording a whole new EP for our upcoming cross canada tour in august/september, fun!

this friday, july 30th, we will be performing our last montreal show for a couple of months at la sala rossa (4848 st laurent). we have some surprises in store for you kids, including more new songs and featuring a pianist playing on a baby grand as well as some violin on several songs. also playing this show are Rainer Maria and Uncut. hope to see everyone there,

love,
ocp

9:31 pm - and now i'm lost like that
Dearest fans of OCP,

One Candle Power hve been hit with some unfortunate news and we feel it is an obligation to inform anyone who knows and cares about the band. 3 days ago Moses Mathur informed us that he will be leaving the band and that, beyond our local show this coming Friday, probably will never play another show with us again. The reason for Moses' departure is that he has decided that he wants to pursue other things in his life (namely a degree in medicine) and wants to spend all the time that he can preparing for his future. The rest of us are still in quite a bit of shock as we are supposed to be leaving for a tour of the eastern Canadian provinces in a few days.

There is no bad blood between the remaining members of One Candle Power and Moses. His departure has been a long time in the works, only it occurred a year before we had anticipated. As it stands, One Candle Power will continue on as a band and are seeking someone to replace Moses. Those are some big shoes to fill, but we have faith that in all loss, there is a possibility of gain and that what feels hopeless and horrible right now will only lead us to bigger and better things.

10:57 am - kookooka fuk-u
finally we are back in business...

this weekend we'll be heading down to MASS to play taunton (friday) and then boston (saturday). it has been over a year since we last played down there and so it will be completely amazing. sunday we'll be playing in plattsburg NY which is also going to be pretty awesome.

then friday the 30th we'll be playing in our hometown (montreal) @ casa del popolo with the real hot (physically and in the other way) malajube and a band from sudbury called varge + buche. the boys in malajube think it is the weirdest band name they ever heard, but like they are ones to talk! anyways, both bands we are playing with sing entirely in french, which will be pretty cool.

the next day (may 1st) we leave for our eastern canada tour. we are so very excited to be back on tour again. although it is only for 9 days, it is going to be fun to the max. i am talking bathurst, fredricton, moncton, saint john, pei, sydney, halifax... many shows with our drummer's little brother's band "the courage of being". they are cute kids. we played their first show with them last year in saint john nb and they pretty much blew all the other bands out of the water.

9:08 am - Mambo Italiano
Tonight we are playing a benefit show in Montreal for SHAC (Stop Huntington Animal Cruelty) at Casa Del Popolo.

Other bands on the bill are:
Diebold (who are members of Godspeed! You Black Emperor)
inthebrokensound (a new band worth checking out)
and little white lights (members of lae-tsue and kiss me deadly)

Tomorrow night we are in Hamilton @ The Underground with The Dears
and then sunday night we are in Missisauga @ The lodge with The Constantines.
We played with Constantines almost 2 years ago when we opened for them and the Weakerthans, so it will be really cool to get to hang out with them again.

This weekend is going to pretty much kick ass.
Come Monday afternoon though I am going to have to start getting intensely serious with school since there will be only 2 weeks left in the semmester and I have so much work left to do, but we'll be playing again come Dec. 12th... I believe in Ottawa.

the show with the mates of state the other night was superb. they are such nice people. they asked to trade stuff with us, and they even gave us extra stuff.
thanks to the lj kids who came to the show.

in other news:
we were robbed. someone broke into our van and took all our money out of our cashbox. this blows chunksbecause we were already in debt several thousand dollars. now we just don't know what to do...
we need new shirts and new cds, but have no money to make new shirts or cds.

*sigh*
donations welcome.

11:42 am - i love grapefruit season
the show last night was so good. balafre is a small venue that holds about 75 people and it was just packed. so many faces that i haven't seen before, but hope to see again.
and my mom was there celebrating her birthday which was real cool. MY MOM at an indie rock show on her birthday, rocking out with us kids.

next show is this friday in trois-rivieres with fifth hour hero, the awards and the lifeactor. i'm looking forward to it, i've never been to trois-rivieres.

last week ocp got some press in the big alternative weekly. the article was kind of... random, but hell, any press is good press. you can take a peek at it here: feature in hour magazine

anyways, if any of you ljkids where at the show last night, just want to say thank you thank you. it was great to see so many people out on a monday. for those of you who weren't there... you better show up at the mates of state show next wednesday!

1:32 pm - i have to pee
julien comes home this weekend. we are very excited! he has spent the past month away in vanuatu producing a play and so our contact with him has been minimal.
since his departure both moses and andre have gotten glasses. i haven't seen andre's yet but i'm assuming that they will be pretty HOTTT.
the boys don't know that i made this livejournal. i saw coma eternal's and got jealous. i made this account like, 2 years ago or something and never did anything with it.

our next show is sept. 13 in some weird town in quebec that i have never been too. i hadn't even heard of it until we got booked to play it. some fest thing.
then we play the 15th in montreal with upupdowndowndleftrightleftrightbastart. i designed the flyer yesterday. chris altered it for a poster design today and he's about to go to the screenprint room to prep our screens so that he can print them tomorrow while i am at work. it's pretty fucking sweet.
